Laird Joins Cast of “Lord Tom”…

Cast & Creatives of the new musical “Lord Tom” at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre in Manhattan. May 2013.

A few days ago I had the pleasure of performing in a series of readings of a very exciting new musical project: “Lord Tom”, with music & lyrics by Stanley Jay Gelber and co-written with Kimberly Vaughn. Based on the famous novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, the new musical is being directed by Tazewell Thompson – and it has been a real pleasure to spend the last week in his rehearsal room. The cast he has assembled is absolutely first-rate, and I feel especially lucky to be involved as the part (as sometimes happens in our business) just fell into my lap: the actor who played my role in previous workshops of the show had to drop out due to other commitments – and so the part found it’s way to me. I couldn’t have been happier; it was a real thrill to play the ultra-conflicted Arthur Shelby and to sing the moving duet “Strawberry Hill” with the magnificently voiced Phillip Boykin. It was a great atmosphere in the studio and the entire cast was a pleasure to work with. When we performed the show in two packed presentations at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Playwrights Horizons on 42nd Street I was thrilled to see the show so enthusiastically received. With Stanley’s beautiful score and it’s inherently powerful story, I am very excited to see what happens next for “Lord Tom” on it’s road to Broadway…
