One of the places in the world I most wish I could be tonight is in Toronto to see the opening of Opera Atelier’s new production of “Der Freischutz”. Opera Atelier, created and co-directed by my two dear friends Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunnesse Zingg will forever be one of my favourite theatre companies. I have performed in ten of their Baroque theatre productions, and had some of the best experiences in my career with the company. Tonight, with Carl Maria von Weber’s 1821 masterpiece “Der Freischutz” (“The Marksman”) they make a major departure: their first foray into the 19th century. It is an incredibly exciting project, and the idea of missing what promises to be an extraordinary production pains me. I encourage anyone for whom is is even remotely possible to attend one of the performances to buy their tickets immediately. Opera Atelier never disappoints, but this production is especially not to be missed.
If you’re able to see it, I will be very jealous of you!
